Innovative ADR: Our Story

Innovative ADR International LLC founder, mediator, and arbitrator Doug Witten began his legal career practicing corporate healthcare law at two of the largest and most prominent law firms in the world. Early on, Doug gained experience in transactional and litigation practice, where he witnessed first-hand the true risks, costs, and uncertainties his clients faced when going to court to resolve legal conflicts.

Fortunately, during that time Doug was also exposed to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes – like mediation and arbitration – that increasingly provide parties flexible, efficient ways to end their disputes. The more he learned, the more Doug envisioned how beneficial these processes could be to relieve conflict for so many people and organizations. And he knew that he wanted to focus his work on just that: helping parties resolve matters with less wasted time, effort, and money – and with more control – compared to what traditional court systems can offer.

To become a mediator, and later an arbitrator, Doug decided to hone his negotiation and mediation skills by rolling up his sleeves and going to work. Doug left his prestigious law practice to serve in state government and, after spending time in Spain mastering his language skills, for years mediated disputes between injured workers, employers, and insurance companies.

Doug’s background in medical and insurance issues, coupled with his Spanish-speaking and other communication skills, enabled him to carve a niche assisting parties to close these cases through dialogue, patience, creativity, and determination.

In 2015, Doug decided to return to private practice as a seasoned dispute-resolver and dedicate his professional life to assisting those in conflict and in need of closure. Doug draws on his law firm, government, and ADR experience, and concentrates his practice on disputes involving workers’ compensation and other injuries, healthcare, insurance, commercial and business matters. He believes that challenges often become opportunities for parties who turn to ADR, and that mediation and arbitration lead to more satisfactory processes and outcomes for participants committed to finding common ground.

To every case he mediates or arbitrates, Doug brings the same attention to detail, open-mindedness, calmness, and persistence that have propelled him throughout his legal career. He understands that each case is unique – a bundle of distinct facts, law, and personalities – and delivers the thoughtful and dedicated energy you would expect from a leader in the ADR field.

When he’s not mediating or arbitrating, you can find Doug writing, speaking, presenting, or training on ADR topics. Mission & Approach

Our mission is to provide trustworthy dispute resolution services, focused on enhancing the parties’ collaboration, to achieve effective results.

At Innovative ADR, we are committed to the idea that most disputes can be resolved more efficiently and effectively outside of the traditional court system. Litigation typically involves more time, risk, money, stress, and emotional capital — yet affords parties less control — than alternative dispute resolution processes like mediation and arbitration.

Conflict can be difficult and challenging. Fortunately, where there is challenge there is also opportunity.

Although we have a robust judicial system to resolve disputes, the courts can be cumbersome, costly, slow, and unpredictable. Innovative ADR exists so that parties who prefer efficiency, reliability, creativity, and professional attention have better alternatives to meet their needs.
